The list menu

Overview

Every day list and smart list has a ⋯ menu in its top right corner. It holds everything you can do with that list: work modes, grouping, layout, filters, sorting and display options. Since version 1.71 it is laid out like the mobile app, so the options are easier to scan, and you can pin the ones you use most right next to the dots.

What's in the menu

The menu is split into sections. You only see the options that make sense for the list you're on and the features you have turned on.

  • Work modes: big tiles for ways of working through the list, such as Super Focus, Task Jar, Spin Wheel, Truncate, This or That, Random Task, Beat the Clock, AI Plan and Agenda View. A mode that is running is highlighted, and its tile changes to let you exit it (for example Exit Jar).

  • Organize: pills for Group by, Set layout, Filter and Sort. Each pill shows its current value, like "None", "Duration", "2 active" or "Custom", so you can see how the list is set up without opening anything.

  • Display: on/off switches for things like Quick filter, Task pills, Metadata, Duration, Category, Completion image, Backburner items, Note and Day Note. Switches flip right away and the menu stays open, so you can try a few in a row.

  • Actions: everything else, such as Print List.

Some entries have a small extra button, like the gear on Truncate or Task pills, which opens that option's settings.

Show hidden

When a list has hidden items, a three-way switch appears at the top of the menu: All, Open only and Hidden only. The number on Hidden only tells you how many items are hidden. On smart lists, hidden items are snoozed, backburnered or waiting on another task. On the day list, they are snoozed tasks and (if you hide them there) tasks waiting on another task.

Pin your favorite options

Right-click any entry in the menu and choose Pin as shortcut. It then shows up as a small icon right next to the ⋯, so it's one click away. To remove it, right-click the icon and choose Remove shortcut.

Shortcuts are saved for your account, not per list. A shortcut only appears on lists where that option is available.

Settings

You can switch back to the old one-column menu in Settings under Interactions > List Menu:

  • Menu layout: Icon menu (grouped, like the mobile app) or List (one row per option) (default: Icon menu)

Pinning new shortcuts works in the Icon menu layout.

Tip: Pin Quick filter if you often search inside a long list. One click and the search box is there.
